Welcome to the Cambridge Archaeological Unit

We have been providing archaeological services across the east of England and beyond for over thirty years, and we have a reputation for excellence and innovation in field techniques and professional practice. Most of our projects are for commercial clients in the housing, mineral extraction and infrastructure sectors. Our expertise helps our clients discharge archaeological planning conditions with confidence.

Our office is based in Cambridge, and includes a highly experienced team of field staff and in-house specialists. Working extensively in the Cambridge region, we have built up particular strengths in wetland and urban archaeology.

The CAU is part of the University of Cambridge. We were established in 1990 to create a bridge between commercial and academic archaeology. We have grown into the UK’s leading research-focused archaeological unit, with many leading heritage professionals and university lecturers beginning their careers with us.
